Belg 5 Shore-end

The Shore-end was laid in September 1985

This is the Cable Ship Director General Bast working at Dumpton Gap, Broadstairs, Kent

The jointing process was slow and complex with this first cable. The fibres had to be stripped, cleaned and cleaved manually. Aligning the fibres in the splicing machine was also a delicate manual operation.

The fibres were wrapped around the assembly and the splices

placed into slots in the centre of the joint.
